How to Make Your Website Look and Act Professional
An Uncluttered Website has Impact
Have you ever been to a website that appeared it was the victim of plastic explosives? It looked like somebody had a brainstorming session with twenty-five other people and threw all the ideas into one big, messy pile and called it a home page. This is very frustrating when you are honestly seeking a particular product or bit of information. Too many distracting colors and flashing messages take away from the main point of the site and will cause viewers to go to anywhere else that makes it easier to find what they need.
- Keep the clutter out of your website.
- Choose a theme that can be carried throughout all the pages.
- Stick to the same font styles and add emphasis by using boldface text or larger fonts.
- Use animated graphics sparingly; too many flashing graphics are very annoying.
- If you want a sound track on your site with background music, let it shut off automatically within a few seconds.
- Intense background colors make the text hard to read, so keep it simple.
- Choose the message you want to deliver and stick to it.
Make Your Website Easy to Navigate
The main navigation links on your site must be apparent and easy to locate. The layout for your navigation bar should be identical on every page. You will badly confuse your readers if you are not consistent. The main navigation links should take you to every primary page on your site from any page on the site. There is nothing worse than opening up a new page on a site and then not being able to navigate to other pages. A well-designed navigation bar makes your site look professional.
Additional or secondary pages on your site can be linked from a drop down menu on your main navigation bar or from the primary pages. For example, on the products button on your navigation bar your drop down menu can list all the product pages. This makes it quick and easy for your viewers to get to the information they need immediately. Statistics show that every time readers are forced to click on another link to get closer to the information they want, you lose 50% of them. Think about this when you organize your site.
If you have a lot of pages with additional information, you can create links to them from the primary pages. If your content is interesting/informative/entertaining enough your viewers will not mind clicking through to continue reading. This quality is referred to as “stickiness.” A sticky website offers content that entices readers to stay longer and return often.
Your Content Should Reflect the Intelligence of Your Readers
They say content is “king” and they are right. Content is king, queen, knight, bishop and anything else that has influence. People are far too educated to be taken in by flash and empty language these days. Your content needs to be unique and provide value your viewers cannot find anywhere else on the World Wide Web. Make sure you check your pages for spelling and grammar. A polished website reflects the quality of your business and products. Make sure all the links on your pages are in working order. (As an aside, the more content you have on your site the more it helps you in the search engines. This is why it is good to continue adding new articles regularly.)
Your content should be easy to read and have a good flow, regardless of how technical in nature it is. Don’t be afraid to offer references to support your material. This validates your trustworthiness. Spicing it up with humor, appropriate images and great quotes is a bonus. Don’t waste your time on article spinning software that regurgitates the same material in several different strange ways. Invest in having top notch articles written.
The Controversial “Call to Action”
There is the question of the call to action. You will nearly always hear that you need a “salesy” call to action on your website, which is basically a command to act right now or lose the opportunity you have been waiting your entire life to bump into. It’s the kind of pressure you are subjected to while watching infomercials and direct marketing come-ons. You know the lingo – run to your phone right now and we’ll send you the dust collecting object you know you can’t live without and then we’ll give you a big discount if you sign up to get another one in the mail every time the moon is full for the next seven generations!
Hopefully your attitude toward your market is more respectful and you are treating your clientele as if they have a decent level of intelligence. Another point to remember is you want returning customers and referrals so you need to concentrate on building relationships and that begins with communicating honestly. If you are a small to mid-size business you cannot emulate the big, established sites such as Amazon that are basically online catalogs. You need excellent quality content and information on your site that will intrigue your readers and keep them coming back.
Communicate with Your Audience Memorably
More than “buy now” buttons you need clearly defined ways for people to contact you by email, phone or chat to become more educated about the products and services your company offers. Give your potential customers reasons to believe in you and trust you enough to give you their credit card numbers. This is how you will affect more sales through your website.
Your website must capture your viewer’s attention and engage it in a way that gives them a memorable experience. Using video presentations on a website is one of the most effective ways to use the elements of audio, visual and feeling to create the impact you intend to deliver to your audience. It helps to increase the viewers’ understanding of your products and draws them to focus on key points that produce sales in the long run by engaging all of their senses in a meaningful way. The human connection is what creates long term loyalty.
Finishing Touches That Make a Difference
There are a few more things to add to your site to make it well-rounded:
- The ability for the reader to get to the product order page from any page on the site.
- The “contact us” link available on every page. Your contact information needs to include a brick and mortar address.
- A really great “about us” page that talks about the people and philosophies that make your company what is it – this goes a long way for developing a trusting relationship with your readers.
- A site map link placed somewhere obvious such as in an upper corner or on the footer. The site map needs to have a link to every page on your site so the readers and the search engine crawlers can find everything your site offers with ease.

Unique Content: California Kid Makes $9800 With Overnight Internet Launch
Here’s an example of unique content written for article syndication. You’ll find the original article on EzinesArticles.com, GoArticles.com and more…
California Kid Makes $9800 With Overnight Internet Launch
No, he didn’t cash in by saving “noobie” Internet marketers from being pushed off a cliff by a sheriff gone mad. He didn’t blog for bucks at WEC martial arts featherweight championships. Neither did he do it all in one night. For anyone worried about getting laid off or downsized he’s an example of having a vision and work ethic that proves money can be made on the internet. People living paycheck to paycheck or in fear the axe is about to drop ought to listen up.
The California Kid (CK) had a gut feeling he could get off his dad’s “allowance” program by doing something huge online. He started sniffing around for the juiciest stories by the colossal Internet marketing gurus. He lapped up their wisdom like a hungry kitten on fresh cream.
It really didn’t seem that difficult to the CK. It was a matter of motivation – like get off the proverbial “massively multiplayer online game butt” and hop to it. He settled on the idea of a membership site because it would create residual income. The membership entailed joining a club that gave you the rights to a new “turnkey” website each month that was already set up to generate income from advertising revenues.
The CK chose this model because it would have long lasting value for his clients, making it a winner for everyone. He found some talent to help him create content and graphics for the sites and then approached the owner of an Internet marketing forum with a deal.
He offered the gentleman a percentage of the sales in exchange for promoting the membership product on his forum. To the CK’s surprise the chap (a citizen of the U.K.) agreed.
Before the story continues it’s time to “fess” up. The CK was not really getting an allowance at the time – he was experiencing a decent level of success in the field of search engine optimization working for some Fortune 1000 companies. He didn’t sit around playing computer games, but he was living with his parents.
Before he went to sleep that night he told his mom about his venture but she didn’t get it. He sent out his prelaunch notice to the minuscule list he had managed to build on his own and was thrilled when he sold 2 memberships. He went to bed clutching the knot in his gut, knowing the big launch from his U.K. partner’s forum was scheduled to happen while he was asleep.
The next morning the CK opened up his email account and freaked. The membership had sold out and he had a waiting list of 400 people. $9,800 was sitting in his online account. The CK’s message for us is this: find a market of hungry people and focus on finding a product that gives them a solution to something in their life that matters. The more people you can help along your road to success, the wealthier you will become.

Get Real with Unique Content in Marketing
Here is something I sent to our writing team today:
I justed wanted to make the point that the unique content articles and blog posts we write are essential elements in creating sales for the customer that owns the website for which we are writing. I really like it when I hear back from the SEO company I work with that their customer has commented they have so much new business from the website we did for them they had to hire more staff to handle the volume of incoming calls. (This customer just signed up for a second website yesterday, which means you and I just landed a new paying contract.)
The information we provide through the unique content we write makes the first impression on a reader and makes or breaks a sale.
The bottom line is that we, as writers must keep this in mind at all times when creating the unique content. We have to make it real and applicable for the reader. We have to talk to their situation and create a real image in their minds where they see themselves already with the product, reaping the benefits of the product. Use words to help them feel the difference. Infer the assumption that they already have the product. Talk to them using terms of present time. Once they get a taste (a feeling) for how it satisfies a need they had, their interest will skyrocket. That’s when we tell them who, where and how to purchase the product right now.
The more skilled we are at doing this, the more sales will result for the website owner. Their sales stats go up, they are happier than ever with the website we built for them, our reputation as marketing writers goes up and our stats go up because we sell more of our unique content writing services. That’s how we stay viable as writers.

Advice for Unique Content Writers
Here are some things I have learned about writing unique content for websites that may help you….
The balance between creating a keyword rich article and valuable information is a constant challenge when writing unique content for the internet. We have to make sure the keyword is there enough times for the search engines to find the website, but with millions of other websites out there on the world wide web, the unique content must be compelling enough to make people want to stay and read more. The longer a person stays on a website because of the quality of the information, the more likely they are to buy a product or service from that website. The unique content must offer a solution to their problem, put you (the owner of the website) in the position of being the authority and therefore a trustworthy source, and it must be REAL to the reader.
In other words, the unique content needs to talk directly to them about their real life situations and what you can do to make it better for them. Put yourself in the shoes of the readership for a moment and consider what you would like to be said to you in a given situation. What would strike a chord in you and convince you that this company has what you need? What unique content would resonate strongly enough with you to make you pay your hard-earned money for the product or service offered on this website? Does it appear the company that owns this website understands your personal or business issues and do you believe they can help you?
The end result for a website offering products and services is customers. As writers of unique content we need to keep this in mind – our words must be a constant nudging of the readers toward becoming customers. We have to be able to convince them in the first couple sentences that we understand their problem and we have their solution. As they continue to read our unique content, they must begin to feel relief because they know they can trust us to make it better for them. When the words in our unique content have conveyed this message and they begin the process of coverting from a visitor to a customer, we have done our job well.

Superior Unique Content Makes You the Authority
Using a well-planned search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) strategy with unique content written for that purpose will get masses of visitors to your website. Once they land on your page the goal is to keep them on your website as long as possible. One of the factors that influences the level of “stickiness” on your site is the quality of your unique content.
Keep in mind that there are thousands and sometimes millions of websites on the World Wide Web that a person could click on when they do a search in for example, Google, MSM or Yahoo. They are looking for information, products and services. They may click on the link to your website because you have an excellent keyword focused page that makes it show up high in the search engines. The unique content on the rest of your site needs to be relevant to the topic that person just came to you to read about.
Top quality information presented in well-written unique content will inspire your audience to stay on your site and read more. The longer they stay on your site, the more exposure they have to what you are selling. If you offer them unique content that gives then thorough answers to their questions, their level of trust in you as an authority on the subject increases. They are more inclined to buy from a source they trust.
Not only that, but the search engines love unique content that allows your site to be recognized as the authoritative source on a particular subject or niche. If your site is full of filler material used to slam the pages with keywords, you’ll get a “thumbs down” from the search engines. You must offer superior unique content that provides your readers with valuable substance, a reason to stay longer and return often.

Unique Content on Sniper Blogs
Sniper blogs are websites designed with unique content to target a niche market. A niche market is a carefully pinpointed market segment. A sniper blog is not intended to attract a broad audience. It is intended to offer a product or service to a select demographic group. This means that the sniper blog must include content that:
- Meets the unique market needs of your market segment
- Uses the “hot buttons” that appeal to your market segment
For the internet, this translates into selecting the appropriate keyword to use in the unique content for your sniper blog. The more specific you are with choosing a keyword that appeals to your unique market segment, the more successful your sniper blog will be in terms of attracting the type of traffic you are seeking and placement in the search engines. Keep in mind that .com and .net URLs work best with sniper blogs.
To determine your niche markets, break your broad demographic audience into as many subcategories as possible and this will show you the various core groups that make up your broad audience. Choose a keyword that is appropriate for one of your core audiences. You can have as many sniper blogs as you have core audiences.
Technically a sniper blog acts like a website, but as a marketing tool it is similar to a “lost leader” type promotion conducted by a retail grocer. The grocer will advertise sale prices on certain products to entice customers into the store, because they know that once the customer is in the store, he or she will buy more than the advertised items and it will encourage repeat business. A sniper blog attracts traffic looking for a specific type of product or service, but it then directs that traffic to your main website where all of your related products and services are clearly offered.
In the technical sense, a sniper blog needs to be handled with the same type of marketing tools used to promote a regular website, including unique content. Each sniper blog is subject to many variables that affect its position in the search engines. Some sniper blogs show up very quickly in the top pages of the search engines, while others take require more effort. The more unique your keyword is the better will be your results. The tools used for promoting a sniper blog will help it to move more quickly to top positions in the search engines and will help drive more traffic to your main website. Once it has reached the search engine placement you are seeking, it normally requires the implementation of website marketing tactics to hold the position.
It is a fact that the general broadness of your “web presence” affects how much traffic you get and therefore sales you achieve through internet marketing efforts. A sniper blog expands your web presence with unique content and helps you capture more of the market share. A sniper blog is not intended to be the end point for your audience. It is a “landing page” that directs the visitors to your main product website where they can be converted into a customer. The sniper blog offers links to your main website that either gives the visitor more information before moving them to a sale or moves them directly to a sale.

Unique Content for Landing Pages
One of the greatest things you can do if you have a website is post articles, ads and snippets of information about your business or organization in as many places as you can on the internet. Every place you leave a link back to your website can direct potential customers to your site for years to come. Just make sure that the link you leave behind takes a web surfer to the correct page on your site. The page that shows up when they click on your link is called a “landing page”. This page needs to contain the information you advertised would be there.
Nothing is more frustrating than clicking on a link embedded in some content that takes you somewhere you don’t want to go. For example, your read a great article online that talks about the health benefits of a certain brand of vitamin supplement and you become interested in buying it. You click on the link offered in the article, but when the page opens you can find nothing that mentions that supplement. If you scroll around on the age for a while you might find a link that mentions the company’s products. By then you are annoyed and leave the website. The company that owns the website just lost your sale.
You have to detertmine when you are leaving links to your site out in the internet universe exactly what you intent for people that click on the link to do when they get there. If you are selling a product, you better have all the product details and ordering information right in their face. Keep in mind that each time your audience has to click on another link to get what they want, you lose at least half of it. People that surf the net expect instant gratification and will leave your website if the information they want is not instantly evident.
Your landing page needs to include unique content that gives your audience the information they went there for in the first place, and it needs to be laid out in an easy to follow format with “calls to action”. This is how you convert a visitor into a sale.
